Uncommon Carriers
The book discussion of John McPhee's Uncommon Carriers was lively - Doris said that the numbers and the size of the information was mind-blowing. Mary Ann brought pictures to share of Mississippi barges being PULLED and of the statue and obelisk in Concord. Discussion leader Mary F. said that the book was easier to understand when she realize it is a collection of separate essays. Bea said she would now know to pick a lobster with its tail up when dining out. Other topics discussed were the kosher process for food preparation and transport, how dangerous many of the jobs seemed to be, and how little any of us knew about boats (or are they ships). Everyone agreed that the book should have included maps to make the transportation routes easier to follow.
